Here’s some pics of the various prototypes for the Wind Synthesiser for the sound installation Phantom Field, by Mark Anderson for Audible Forces. Twenty one Wind Synthesisers will form the installation, creating a swirling buffeting soundscape.

The Wind Synthesisers use an Atari Punk Synthesiser (built and modified by Graham Calvert) and computer fan to transform the slightest breath of wind into an adjustable audio signal. At each installation site and during the day of each show the Wind Synthesisers will be adjusted and played by the artist to create swirling harmonics, and gale force sirens.

A short video clip is here http://vimeo.com/63086962

After playing around with the adjustments on the synths, I was managing to get a very theramin sound.

The final design after talking to Graham Calvert, now incorperates a 'tuning' switch, so that each wind synth can be set to a specific pitch when they reach their maximum speed, he has also changed the desin so that even when turning at very slowly they produce a sound.

God knows what twenty one will sound like, but I am looking forward to hearing them together, and 'playing them'.

Initially they will be set out in rows of 1,3,5 and 7, in a triangular pattern.
